Chapter 2 - The Stolen Identity

I stood frozen outside the bathroom door as my entire world shattered into a million jagged pieces.
Alejandro was actively preparing to kidnap my only child and sell her to a stranger.
I watched in absolute horror as he pulled a small bottle of harsh chemicals from his pocket.
He was forcefully washing dark brown dye out of Sofia's hair to permanently alter her appearance.
The mysterious bruises on her arms were from him roughly holding her still while she cried in silence.
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a crisp, brand-new passport featuring Sofia's terrified face.
He smiled coldly and told her that her new name was Isabella and they were leaving Mommy forever.
I took a shaky step backward, completely overwhelmed by the monstrous betrayal unfolding in front of me.
My trembling foot accidentally bumped against a heavy ceramic vase sitting on the hallway table.
The vase wobbled dangerously before crashing onto the hardwood floor with a deafening shatter.
The running water in the bathroom stopped instantly.
Alejandro cursed loudly and demanded to know who was out there.
Panic seized my entire body as I heard his heavy footsteps moving rapidly toward the door.
I desperately sprinted down the hallway and slipped quietly into the master bedroom.
I threw myself into the dark, spacious walk-in closet and pulled the wooden louvered doors shut.
I held my breath, pressing my trembling hands tightly over my mouth to silence my own sobs.
Alejandro stormed into the bedroom, his heavy boots echoing loudly against the wooden floorboards.
He aggressively threw open the bathroom door, searching every single corner of the hallway.
I could hear him breathing heavily just inches away from my hiding spot.
He slowly walked over to the closet and grabbed the brass handle.
I closed my eyes and prepared to fight for my life.
Suddenly, his burner phone vibrated loudly in his jacket pocket.
He let go of the closet handle and quickly answered the urgent call.

He whispered that there was a slight complication and he needed to secure the perimeter immediately.
I heard him walk downstairs, followed by the terrifying sound of the front door being locked with a heavy deadbolt.
