Chapter 5 - The Basement Secret

Alejandro slowly walked down the wooden stairs, holding a bright tactical flashlight in one hand and his knife in the other.
He taunted me from the darkness, promising that my death would look exactly like a tragic domestic accident.
I held my breath and pressed my body perfectly flat against the cold concrete wall.
As his flashlight beam swept across the room, it briefly illuminated a false wooden panel near the old furnace.
The panel was partially broken, revealing a terrifying, hidden cavity built directly into the foundation.
Inside the dark cavity were dozens of small, colorful backpacks and tiny pairs of children's shoes.
The horrifying realization hit me that Sofia was absolutely not his first victim.
He was a prolific, monstrous serial trafficker who had destroyed countless innocent families over the years.
My fear instantly evaporated, replaced entirely by a blinding, primal rage I had never felt before.
He stepped completely into the center of the basement, turning his back to my dark corner for one crucial second.
I did not hesitate or make a single sound as I stepped out of the shadows.
I raised the heavy iron pipe high above my head using every ounce of strength remaining in my bruised body.
I swung the metal pipe with absolute fury, striking him squarely in the back of his right knee.
Alejandro screamed in sudden agony as his leg buckled completely beneath him.
He dropped the tactical flashlight, plunging the room into a chaotic, spinning display of shadows.
I swung the pipe again, hitting his shoulder so hard I heard the collarbone loudly snap.
He wildly slashed his hunting knife in the dark, managing to slice a deep cut across my left thigh.
I ignored the burning pain and aggressively kicked the knife completely out of his hand.
I brought the heavy iron pipe down against the side of his head with a sickening crunch.
He collapsed onto the damp concrete floor, completely unconscious and bleeding heavily.
I dropped the bloody pipe and desperately searched his pockets for the heavy ring of keys.
I found them, grabbed the flashlight, and sprinted fiercely up the wooden stairs.
I unlocked the heavy basement door and rushed frantically into the main hallway to find my daughter.

I burst into Sofia's bedroom, completely prepared to grab her and run out into the storm.
But the small bed was completely empty, and the window was wide open.
