Chapter 8 - The Rubble

The detonator hit the concrete floor of the basement with a loud, metallic clink.

A massive, deafening explosion instantly ripped entirely through the foundation of the warehouse.

The concrete floor beneath Dominic's feet completely disintegrated into dust and fire.

He fell violently into the dark, suffocating abyss of smoke and shattered metal.

The entire building collapsed in on itself, crushing everything under tons of heavy steel.

Dominic woke up hours later in absolute, terrifying darkness.

His body was completely pinned underneath a massive, heavy steel support beam.

Every single breath sent agonizing, sharp pain radiating through his crushed ribs.

He coughed violently, tasting thick dust and warm blood in his dry mouth.

He could not move his legs or his left arm at all.

He assumed this was exactly how he was going to die, completely alone in the dark.

He closed his eyes and thought only of Sophia and the little girl with the blanket.

He hoped they were far away, living a safe and happy life without the mafia hanging over them.

Suddenly, he heard the faint, desperate sound of scraping metal directly above him.

A small beam of bright light pierced entirely through the thick cloud of dust.

He heard someone screaming his name with raw, completely unrestrained panic.

It was Sophia's beautiful, frantic voice.

She had refused to run away and had stayed to dig through the rubble with her bare hands.

She desperately cleared away the shattered concrete, completely ignoring her bleeding, torn fingers.

Enzo appeared beside her, using a heavy iron pipe to pry the steel beam off Dominic's crushed body.

They managed to lift the immense weight just enough for Dominic to slide painfully out.

Sophia pulled him tightly into her arms, crying tears of pure, overwhelming relief.

Dominic held her fiercely, promising he would never leave her side again.

They slowly limped out of the destroyed warehouse and stepped into the cool night air.

Their profound moment of victory was instantly ruined by the blare of approaching police sirens.

Dozens of heavily armed squad cars had already completely surrounded the shipping yards.
