Chapter 2 - The Traitor Inside
Dominic immediately dove to the floor and dragged Sophia down with him.
The red laser dot tracked rapidly across the kitchen cabinets.
He shielded Sophia's trembling body with his own massive frame.
He raised his pistol and aimed it toward the dark archway leading to the dining room.
A tall figure stepped out of the shadows holding a specialized sniper rifle.
It was Enzo, Dominic's most trusted underboss and lifelong best friend.
Enzo slowly lowered the weapon and flipped on the kitchen lights.
He claimed he had seen the laser from the perimeter and was tracking the source outside.
Dominic did not lower his pistol for a single second.
He noticed the mud on Enzo's expensive leather shoes did not match the dry weather outside.
Enzo had been inside the house the entire time.
Dominic stood up slowly, keeping his body positioned between Enzo and the terrified mother.
He demanded to know exactly how a heavily armed assassin had bypassed the estate's security system.
Enzo shrugged and offered a perfectly calm, rehearsed excuse about a system malfunction.
Sophia suddenly grabbed Dominic's arm with trembling fingers.
She whispered that Enzo was the exact man who had secretly hired her three months ago.
Enzo's relaxed expression instantly hardened into a mask of pure violence.
He realized his carefully constructed cover was completely blown.
He raised the rifle again, aiming it directly at Sophia's head.
He told Dominic that this woman was a massive liability to the entire Moretti family.
Enzo explained that Sophia was actively hiding from the Falcone syndicate.
The Falcone family was the most dangerous rival cartel in the entire city.
Enzo had planned to execute Sophia and frame the Falcones to start a profitable gang war.
Dominic felt a profound wave of disgust replace all of his previous exhaustion.
He told his former friend that he would never let an innocent child die for business.

Enzo laughed and pulled the trigger without any hesitation.
Dominic threw a heavy kitchen knife with blinding speed, striking Enzo perfectly in the shoulder before the bullet could fire.
