Chapter 7 - The True Mastermind

Everyone froze and looked up toward the rusty steel catwalk near the warehouse ceiling.
A tall man dressed in an expensive, perfectly tailored suit stood in the shadows.
He casually held a detonator switch in his right hand.
"I have wired this entire building with military-grade explosives," the man announced calmly.
The SWAT commander immediately ordered his men to hold their fire and assess the explosive threat.
The man stepped into the light, and my heart completely stopped in my chest.
It was Richard Vance, the senior partner at Marcus's law firm and his estranged older brother.
"Richard?" I gasped, completely shocked to see the wealthy lawyer in this grimy warehouse.
"Hello, Camila," Richard smiled, a terrifyingly empty expression on his face.
"Marcus and Sebastian are absolute idiots, but they were very useful distractions for my plan."
Richard explained that he was the actual mastermind behind the entire financial conspiracy.
He was the one who owed millions of dollars to a dangerous international syndicate, not Sebastian.
He used his brothers' greed to orchestrate the theft of my mother's eight million dollars to save his own life.
"You really thought a local loan shark was the biggest threat in the room?" Richard mocked.
He demanded that the FBI agents drop their weapons and release Marcus and Sebastian immediately.
"If you do not let us walk out of here with the signed trust documents, I will level this entire city block," Richard threatened.
The SWAT commander slowly lowered his rifle, unwilling to risk the lives of his entire team.
Marcus and Sebastian stood up, looking at their older brother with absolute shock and fear.
Richard ordered me to walk up the metal stairs to the catwalk and bring the trust documents with me.
I looked at the FBI agent beside me, who gave me a very subtle, almost imperceptible nod.
I picked up the documents and slowly began to climb the metal stairs toward the madman.

When I reached the top, Richard eagerly snatched the papers from my trembling hands.
He did not realize that the ink pen I was holding was actually a high-tech tactical strobe device the FBI had just handed me.
