Chapter 1 - The True Inheritance

Marcus ripped the folder open with trembling hands.
Beatrice leaned over his shoulder with a greedy glint in her eyes.
They both expected to see a cashier's check or a wire transfer confirmation for eight million dollars.
Instead, Marcus pulled out a thick stack of legal documents stamped with a federal seal.
His confident smile instantly dissolved into a mask of pure confusion.
"What is this?" he asked.
"Those are divorce papers, Marcus," I replied calmly.
Beatrice snatched the second document from the folder.
Her face turned pale as she read the bold print at the top of the page.
"Irrevocable Blind Trust," she whispered out loud.
"Exactly," I said, crossing my arms over my chest.
"Before my mother died, she placed the apartment and all her assets into an ironclad trust."
"I do not have direct access to the money, and you certainly never will."
"The trust is managed by an independent financial firm in New York."
"Any attempt to seize it for a spouse's debt is legally void."
Marcus threw the divorce papers onto the dining room table.
He glared at me with a sudden, terrifying anger I had never seen before.
"You have been planning this behind my back for six months?" he shouted.
"You planned to steal my inheritance to pay for Sebastian's gambling addiction," I fired back.
Beatrice stepped forward and pointed a shaking finger at my face.
"You are a selfish, ungrateful wife!" she screamed.
I walked to the front door and opened it wide.
"Get out of my house before I call the police," I demanded.
Marcus did not move toward the door.
He simply reached into his pocket and pulled out his cell phone.
A wicked, unsettling smile slowly crept across his face.
"You really think you are the only one who prepared for today, Camila?" he asked softly.
He turned the phone screen toward me so I could see a scanned document.
It was a joint account authorization form bearing my exact signature.

"You might have locked the eight million away, but I forged your name yesterday to take out a three-million-dollar loan against the expected estate," Marcus sneered.
"And the men I borrowed that money from are already waiting outside."
