Chapter 3 - The Broken Glass

I dropped my purse and sprinted toward the staircase.
Heavy footsteps crunched against the broken glass on the kitchen floor.
"Camila, do not try to run!" a deep, unfamiliar voice shouted from the hallway.
I scrambled up the wooden stairs, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.
I reached the master bedroom and slammed the heavy oak door shut.
I locked the deadbolt and shoved a heavy wooden dresser in front of the frame.
The intruder slowly walked up the stairs, his boots thudding loudly on each step.
"Your husband sent us inside to collect our three million dollars," the man called out.
I grabbed my husband's heavy metal baseball bat from the back of the closet.
"The police are already on their way!" I lied, gripping the bat with sweaty hands.
The man laughed softly from the other side of the bedroom door.
"We brought a cellular jammer, Camila, so we know you cannot make any calls," he stated calmly.
He jiggled the bedroom doorknob, testing the strength of the lock.
"We do not want to hurt you, we just want you to sign the trust dissolution papers your husband prepared," the man said.
Marcus had planned this entire home invasion to force me to surrender the eight million dollars under duress.
I realized I could not stay in the bedroom and wait for them to break the door down.
I opened the bedroom window and looked down at the sloping roof of the garage.
It was a steep drop, but it was my only chance of escaping this nightmare.

I threw my leg over the window sill and carefully slid onto the cold shingles.
Just as I prepared to jump to the grass below, a hand reached out from the darkness and grabbed my ankle.
