Chapter 2 - The Loan Sharks

I stared at the glowing screen of his cell phone in absolute horror.
"You forged my signature on a three-million-dollar loan?" I asked, my voice trembling.
"Sebastian owed very dangerous people a lot of money, and they were going to kill him," Beatrice stated, defending her criminal son.
"So you offered them my mother's money instead," I realized, feeling sick to my stomach.
Marcus pocketed his phone and casually buttoned his jacket.
"The loan sharks are parked in the black SUV across the street," Marcus explained.
"I told them you were bringing the eight million back from New York this morning."
"When I walk out that door and tell them you hid the money in a trust, they are going to come inside."
"They do not care about legal documents or irrevocable trusts, Camila."
"They only care about getting paid in cash by midnight tonight."
I looked out the living room window and saw the tinted windows of a massive black vehicle idling by the curb.
Panic flared in my chest as I realized Marcus had trapped me in a lethal situation.
"You are going to federal prison for forgery," I told him, trying to maintain my composure.
Marcus laughed aloud, an ugly and cruel sound.
"They will break your legs long before you can ever speak to a detective," he threatened.
He grabbed Beatrice by the arm and guided her toward the open front door.
"Have fun explaining the blind trust to the cartel, sweetheart," Marcus mocked as he stepped onto the porch.
I slammed the heavy front door shut and quickly engaged the deadbolt.
I frantically pulled my cell phone from my purse and dialed 911.
The call connected, but there was only dead silence on the other end of the line.
I pulled the phone away from my ear and saw that I had absolutely zero signal.

Suddenly, a loud, metallic crash echoed from the back of the house.
Someone had just shattered the sliding glass door in my kitchen.
