I stared at the corrupt sheriff in absolute, paralyzing horror as he stepped toward me.
Parker wiped the dirty tears from his eyes and laughed triumphantly from the cabin floor.
He took Ellie's phone and permanently deleted the audio files and all the incriminating text messages.
He threw the device violently against the stone fireplace, smashing it into a dozen useless pieces.
He confidently told the sheriff to take me away so he could finally deal with his son in peace.
I did not cry, nor did I drop to my knees and beg these monsters for mercy.
A slow, calculating smile spread across my bruised and bleeding face as I backed away.
I reached deep into the lining of my jacket and proudly pulled out my actual cell phone.
Parker's triumphant expression completely vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, panicked confusion.
I calmly explained that I had actually sent all the evidence to the FBI field office ten minutes ago.
I revealed that I had intentionally brought Ellie's phone to the cabin purely as a disposable decoy.
The sheriff's radio suddenly crackled with panicked, desperate voices broadcasting from the main road.
