Chapter 6 - The Race in the Dark

The blinding security light paralyzed me for a terrifying fraction of a second.

I heard the heavy, thudding footsteps of Parker's hired men rushing across the wooden deck behind us.

I scooped Dustin into my arms and sprinted as fast as I could toward the dense, overgrown forest.

Sharp branches tore violently at my clothes and scratched deep cuts into my face and arms.

I pushed deeper into the dark woods, navigating the treacherous terrain by memory alone.

Parker and his thugs were crashing through the thick brush, their angry shouts echoing clearly in the night.

I knew they were faster and stronger, and we could not outrun them forever.

I desperately searched the shadows until I finally spotted the old, abandoned hunting cabin.

My grandfather had built it decades ago, and Parker had absolutely no idea it even existed.

I carried Dustin inside the dark structure and quickly barricaded the heavy oak door with a broken table.

The cabin was pitch black, smelling strongly of damp wood, mold, and decaying leaves.

I told Dustin to hide quietly beneath an old canvas tarp in the corner of the room.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone, intending to dial emergency services immediately.

The screen lit up brightly, illuminating the dusty cabin interior with a soft, glowing light.

I stared at the device in my hand, feeling a sudden, paralyzing wave of sheer horror.

The phone in my hand had a bright pink case adorned with cheap plastic rhinestones.

In my frantic rush to leave the kitchen, I had accidentally grabbed Ellie's phone instead of my own.
