Chapter 1 - The Accidental Recording

I guided Dustin up the wooden staircase, my heart aching with every single step we took.

His small, cold hand gripped mine tightly, as if he feared I might suddenly disappear into thin air.

I helped him pack his favorite comic books and clothes into his small blue duffel bag.

Dustin remained completely silent, his eyes fixed on the floor in absolute shame.

I kissed his forehead and promised him that nobody would ever treat him that way again.

As I zipped up his bag, I realized my car keys were still sitting on the kitchen counter downstairs.

I told Dustin to wait quietly in the bedroom while I went to retrieve them.

I crept down the stairs without making a sound, not wanting to engage in another pointless argument with my in-laws.

The kitchen was empty, but I could hear Alana and Ellie whispering frantically on the outdoor patio.

I walked toward the counter to grab my keys, but a glowing red light caught my immediate attention.

Ellie had left her smartphone resting against the fruit bowl, and the screen was completely unlocked.

The red recording icon was flashing steadily, indicating that the voice memo app was currently active.

She had recorded our entire confrontation to undoubtedly play it back for my husband later.

I reached out and stopped the recording, intending to delete the file before she noticed it.

Before I could hit the trash icon, I saw a recent audio file labeled with Parker's name.

My curiosity overpowered my better judgment, and I pressed play with a trembling finger.

Parker's voice echoed softly from the small speaker, sounding cold and incredibly calculating.

He told Ellie that she needed to keep provoking me until I finally snapped and did something crazy.

He laughed as he bragged about successfully draining my secret retirement accounts without my knowledge.

I stood frozen in the kitchen, feeling my entire world violently crumbling beneath my feet.

My loving husband was actively plotting to destroy me financially and emotionally.

The recording continued, and Parker's tone shifted into something far more sinister.

He told his sister that the massive life insurance policy he secretly took out on me had just been finalized yesterday.
