Chapter 7 - The Leverage

I stared at Ellie's unlocked phone in sheer disbelief, my hands shaking violently.
I realized this was the exact device holding the recorded conversation of the murder plot.
I quickly opened her email app and forwarded the horrifying audio files directly to my lawyer's office.
As I browsed the device, I discovered a hidden folder filled with encrypted text messages.
The messages were between Parker and a notorious local criminal, discussing the exact price for my assassination.
Parker's voice suddenly echoed from the dark woods directly outside the cabin walls.
He taunted me, laughing as he claimed that the police would never believe a hysterical, runaway woman.
He began smashing the heavy cabin door with a massive rock he found in the dirt.
The ancient wood splinted and cracked under the violent, relentless assault of his blows.
I knew the barricaded door would not hold for more than a few minutes.
I rushed over to Dustin and hid him securely inside a heavy, reinforced wooden storage chest.
I stood in the absolute center of the room, holding Ellie's glowing phone high in the air.
I yelled through the breaking door that I had all the evidence required to send him to federal prison.
Parker stopped hitting the door, a brief moment of terrifying silence falling over the woods.
He laughed darkly, promising that he would simply burn the cabin to the ground with us inside.

The heavy oak door finally crashed open, completely shattered off its rusted iron hinges.
Parker lunged into the room with a gleaming, deadly hunting knife gripped tightly in his hand.
