Chapter 4 - The Escape Plan

A cold wave of absolute panic surged through my veins as the men stepped closer.

I knew I could not let these violent strangers lay a single finger on my innocent son.

I desperately needed to buy some time to figure out a way out of this nightmare.

I slowly picked up the silver pen, pretending to carefully read the complex legal jargon on the first page.

My mind raced frantically through the layout of the old country house my grandfather had built.

I remembered the hidden servant's staircase tucked discreetly behind the kitchen pantry wall.

I looked up at Parker and told him I needed to use the restroom before I signed away my property.

Parker sneered at me in disgust, but he confidently waved his hand to let me pass.

I walked slowly down the hallway, feeling the heavy gaze of the two men burning into my back.

I slipped into the guest bathroom and locked the door with a loud, deliberate click.

I turned on the sink faucet to mask any noise I might make during my escape.

I quietly pried open the small bathroom window and climbed out onto the wrap-around porch roof.

The rough shingles scraped against my knees as I shuffles carefully toward Dustin's bedroom window.

I prayed that my son was waiting for me right on the other side of the glass.

I reached the window and tapped lightly on the pane, hoping to get his attention.

The curtains slowly pulled back, and the heavy window was unlocked from the inside.

I smiled with intense relief, ready to pull my son out onto the roof to safety.

My smile instantly vanished when the glass slid up to reveal the person waiting inside.

It was not Dustin standing there, but Ellie's spoiled and malicious son, Mason.
