Chapter 7 - The Standoff

The silence in the dark corridor was completely deafening, broken only by Chloe's ragged, terrified breathing.

Dozens of laser sights from the SWAT team's rifles painted glowing red dots across Julian’s white coat.

But not a single federal officer dared to pull the trigger while his thumb rested heavily on the detonator.

"Do exactly what he says, ma'am," the lead SWAT commander whispered to me with absolute dread.

I slowly gripped the cold metal handles of the bed and began pushing Chloe backward.

Sarah followed closely beside me, completely terrified but refusing to abandon her innocent patient.

We pushed the bed slowly back into the center of the operating room, and Julian backed in right after us.

He kicked the heavy wooden door shut and locked it securely from the inside.

"Strap her arms and legs tightly to the table immediately," Julian ordered, waving the detonator at Sarah.

Sarah looked at me with desperate, pleading eyes, silently asking what she should do.

I gave her a tiny, almost imperceptible nod to comply.

We had to buy enough time for the police bomb squad to disable the main oxygen lines downstairs.

Sarah gently secured the thick leather restraints around Chloe’s trembling wrists and ankles.

Chloe looked at me with absolute despair, truly believing she was finally going to die.

"It is going to be okay, I promise you," I whispered, brushing the cold sweat from her forehead.

Julian walked over to the sterile metal tray and picked up a gleaming silver scalpel with his free hand.

"It really is a shame, Evelyn, you were always my favorite relative," Julian mocked cruelly.

He stepped up to the operating table, completely ignoring all standard medical sanitization protocols.

He raised the sharp blade high, preparing to make a massive, unmedicated incision across Chloe's stomach.

Suddenly, Chloe let out a terrifying, agonizing scream that shook the entire room.

Her back arched violently off the table, straining fiercely against the heavy leather restraints as a massive contraction hit.

"The baby is coming right now!" Sarah yelled, checking the monitors rapidly.

May you like

Julian sneered in pure disgust and brought the scalpel down rapidly toward her skin.

Without a second of hesitation, I threw my entire body directly into Julian's path.
