Chapter 1 - The Smiling Predator

The ultrasound room was bathed in a soft blue light.
Chloe lay perfectly still on the examination table, her eyes fixed blindly on the ceiling tiles.
She refused to look at the monitor where the tiny, rapid heartbeat of her unborn child pulsed.
The ultrasound technician smiled warmly, completely oblivious to the terrifying reality hiding beneath my daughter’s hospital gown.
I sat in the corner chair, gripping my leather handbag to keep my fingers from trembling.
The encrypted message I had just sent was already on its way to Arthur, a ruthless corporate investigator I had trusted for twenty years.
Taking down a man like Dr. Julian Thorne required precision, not panic.
Julian owned the hospital board, the local medical examiners, and half the city’s judges.
If I made one wrong move, my daughter would become just another tragic maternal mortality statistic.
Suddenly, the heavy wooden door of the examination room swung open.
Julian walked in wearing a perfectly tailored suit beneath a pristine white lab coat.
His charming smile could disarm an entire room in seconds, but to me, it looked like the bared teeth of a wolf.
He walked to the edge of the bed and kissed Chloe’s forehead with a sickening display of affection.
Chloe flinched so slightly that only a mother looking for it could have noticed.
"How are my two favorite girls doing today?" Julian asked, turning his charismatic gaze toward me.
I forced the muscles in my face to form a warm, appreciative smile.
"We are doing wonderfully, Julian, the baby looks perfect," I replied smoothly.
Julian’s eyes drifted slowly downward, landing on the cell phone still resting in my lap.
I had forgotten to lock the screen after sending the message to Arthur.
The charismatic smile instantly vanished from his handsome face, replaced by a cold, dead stare.

"Who are you texting during my child's ultrasound, Evelyn?" he asked softly.
He held out his large hand, wordlessly demanding that I surrender the device.
