Chapter 2 - The Hidden Ledger

I did not break eye contact with my son-in-law.
I calmly pressed my thumb against the side button, turning the screen completely black.
"I was just reminding the decorators to finish the nursery wallpaper by Tuesday," I lied without missing a single beat.
I dropped the phone casually into my handbag and stood up to face him.
Julian stared at me for three agonizing seconds, searching my eyes for any trace of deception.
His charming smile slowly returned, though it did not reach his cold eyes.
"That is wonderfully thoughtful of you, Evelyn," he said, turning back to the glowing ultrasound monitor.
I excused myself, claiming I needed a cup of coffee from the cafeteria to settle my nerves.
The moment I was safely out of the VIP maternity wing, I rushed down to the underground parking garage.
Arthur was already waiting inside a discreet black sedan parked in the darkest corner of the concrete structure.
I slid into the passenger seat and handed him a cloned flash drive I had secretly taken from Julian’s home office.
"I need you to trace his offshore medical supply shell companies immediately," I told him quickly.
Arthur plugged the drive into his laptop, his fingers flying across the glowing keyboard.
"He hides his money well, but he is incredibly arrogant with his server security," Arthur muttered.
I watched the screen as heavily encrypted financial records began scrolling rapidly.
"He threatened to kill Chloe on the operating table if she tries to leave him," I confessed, my voice finally cracking.
Arthur stopped typing entirely and turned to look at me with wide, horrified eyes.
"Evelyn, you need to look at this right now," Arthur whispered, clicking open a hidden subfolder.
The screen filled with the medical records of five different wealthy women.
Every single one of them had filed for divorce in the past decade, and every single one had died of sudden hemorrhaging during C-sections performed by Julian.
He wasn't just an abusive husband, he was running a highly paid assassination service for rich men who wanted to eliminate their pregnant wives.
Suddenly, my cell phone began to vibrate violently in my hand.

I answered it, and Julian's smooth, terrifying voice filled my ear.
"Evelyn, you need to come back upstairs immediately, because Chloe’s surgery is happening right now," he stated coldly.
