Chapter 3 - The Lockdown

"What do you mean it is happening right now?" I demanded, my heart hammering fiercely against my ribs.
"Her blood pressure spiked dangerously high, so I am taking the baby today," Julian replied without a shred of emotion.
The line went completely dead before I could scream a single word of protest.
He was accelerating the timeline because he suspected I was plotting against him.
I looked frantically at Arthur, who was already forwarding the murder logs to his contacts at the FBI.
"You have to get federal agents here right now, Arthur!" I yelled, throwing the car door open.
I sprinted back toward the hospital elevators, my mind racing with terrifying possibilities.
Chloe was thirty-eight weeks pregnant, which gave Julian the perfect medical excuse to deliver the baby today.
I reached the top floor of the VIP maternity wing, only to find the heavy glass security doors locked tight.
A massive security guard with a cold expression stepped directly in front of the electronic keypad.
"Dr. Thorne has placed this entire wing under a strict medical lockdown, ma'am," the guard stated flatly.
"I am the patient's mother, you have to let me inside!" I shouted, slamming my hands against the thick glass.
The guard crossed his muscular arms and completely ignored my desperate pleas.
I backed away slowly, realizing that causing a scene would only get me forcefully removed from the premises.
I rushed toward the public restrooms down the hall and climbed onto the bathroom sink.
I pushed aside a ceiling tile and hauled myself up into the dusty, cramped ventilation shaft.
I crawled desperately through the dark ductwork, guided only by the faint flashlight on my cell phone.
I positioned myself over the air vent looking directly down into the restricted surgical corridor.

I unscrewed the metal grate carefully and dropped softly onto the sterile linoleum floor.
As I stood up and brushed the dust from my clothes, a firm hand clamped tightly over my mouth from behind.
