Chapter 4 - The Safe House Sanctuary

The impact sent our SUV spinning wildly across the wet asphalt.

Shattered glass rained down on us as the vehicle finally slammed into a concrete barrier.

David kicked the jammed door open and dragged both me and Eleanor out into the pouring rain.

We stumbled down a dark subway stairwell just as armed men poured out of the armored truck.

David led us through the abandoned maintenance tunnels deep beneath the city.

We eventually arrived at a heavily fortified underground bunker hidden behind a rusted steel door.

David locked the heavy deadbolts and began treating a deep cut on his forehead.

Eleanor sat on a metal cot and looked at me with tears streaming down her face.

"Richard is my husband, and he is the man trying to kill you," she confessed.

She explained that her father had left his billion-dollar empire exclusively to her bloodline.

Richard had set fire to my nursery twenty-six years ago to eliminate the only heir and claim the money for himself.

"I was the young bodyguard assigned to watch you that night," David admitted, looking at the floor.

"I pulled you from the flames and left you at that church because it was the only way to keep you hidden from him."

I felt incredibly overwhelmed, realizing my entire life had been a carefully orchestrated lie to keep me breathing.

Suddenly, David walked over to the heavy steel door and locked it from the outside.

He left me and Eleanor trapped inside the small panic room.
