Chapter 1 - The Broken Locket

I stood frozen as the wealthy woman stared at the silver pendant resting against my collarbone.

Her trembling fingers reached into her expensive designer purse.

She pulled out a delicate silver chain holding the exact other half of my crescent-shaped locket.

When the two pieces were brought close together, they formed a perfect, seamless sun.

Eleanor let out a sharp gasp that sounded like a dying breath.

Her eyes rolled back into her head, and she collapsed entirely onto the restaurant floor.

Chaos immediately erupted in the dining room as my manager screamed for someone to call an ambulance.

I dropped to my knees to help her, but a massive hand suddenly grabbed my shoulder.

It was her private driver, a tall man with a deep scar over his left eye.

He did not even look at his unconscious boss.

He looked directly at my matching necklace with absolute terror.

"You have to leave through the back door right now if you want to live," he whispered.

He shoved a blank business card into my apron pocket and scooped the elderly woman into his strong arms.

I stood up, entirely bewildered, and watched him carry her out the front doors.

My mind was racing with a thousand impossible questions about my biological family.

Before I could even process what had just happened, I backed through the swinging doors into the kitchen.

Standing next to the industrial stoves was a man in a black suit who had definitely not been there five minutes ago.

He was showing my manager a surveillance photograph of my face.

When I stepped into the room, the stranger smiled coldly and pulled a suppressed pistol from his jacket.
