Chapter 3 - The Desperate Escape

I dropped the phone and scrambled backward as a massive man stepped out of my closet.
He was holding a long hunting knife that caught the dim street light filtering through the window.
I grabbed a can of pepper spray from my ruined purse and sprayed it directly into his eyes.
The man screamed in agony, dropping the knife and clawing desperately at his face.
I dove back out the window, sliding down the wet metal of the fire escape as fast as I could.
I pulled out the blank business card the driver had given me at the restaurant.
There was only a single phone number written on the back in blue ink.
I dialed it from my personal cell phone while running through the flooded streets of Philadelphia.
"Keep walking toward the shipping docks, I am exactly two blocks away," the driver's voice commanded over the line.
A sleek black SUV suddenly screeched around the corner and threw its rear door open.
I jumped inside the moving vehicle, collapsing onto the leather seats while gasping for air.
Eleanor was sitting in the back seat, looking pale but entirely awake.
She reached out and pulled me into a desperate, bone-crushing hug.
"I thought I lost you forever," she sobbed into my wet hair.
The driver slammed on the gas pedal, weaving recklessly through the midnight traffic.
"My name is David, and we need to get to the safe house before Richard finds us," the driver yelled.

I opened my mouth to ask who Richard was, but a blinding light suddenly flooded the cabin.
A massive armored truck slammed violently into the side of our SUV.
