I did not hesitate for a single second.

I grabbed a heavy cast-iron skillet from the prep counter and hurled it directly at the armed stranger.

The heavy metal struck him in the chest, knocking him backward into a rack of hanging pots.

I sprinted out the rear exit of the restaurant and threw myself into the dark, rainy alleyway.

My heart pounded furiously against my ribs as I ran for blocks without looking back.

I needed to get my passport and my life savings from my apartment before disappearing completely.

I climbed up the rusted fire escape of my building to avoid the main lobby.

My small apartment had been entirely destroyed.

The mattress was slashed, the cabinets were torn off their hinges, and all my clothes were scattered across the floor.

Whoever was looking for me was incredibly thorough and heavily armed.

Sitting perfectly unharmed in the center of the ruined dining table was a cheap burner phone.

It was ringing loudly, echoing through the silent, destroyed room.

I walked over with shaking hands and pressed the phone to my ear.

"You really should have died in that fire twenty-six years ago, Hannah," a deep, cruel voice sneered.

Before I could ask who he was, the closet door behind me slowly began to creak open.
