Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Air

Smoke rapidly filled the small cabin.
The crackling of the flames grew deafening.
Damian grabbed a thick blanket and soaked it in the sink.
He threw it over me and Leah.
He kicked down the back door, but a wall of fire blocked the exit.
The heat was instantly unbearable.
I coughed violently as the oxygen in the room began to vanish.
Leah woke up and started crying softly.
Damian desperately searched for another way out.
He found a small root cellar trapdoor under the rug.
We climbed down into the damp earth as the cabin above us began to collapse.
The cellar was cool, but the air was getting thin.
Leah tugged on my shirt and looked up at me.
She opened her mouth to speak her second sentence ever.
She whispered that the bad man left a toy down here.
I shined Damian's flashlight toward the corner she was pointing at.
May you like
It was not a toy.
It was a heavy steel door with a biometric scanner.
