Chapter 4 - The Broken Window

The sound of shattering glass echoed through the massive house.

Damian shoved me and Leah behind a heavy oak desk.

He told me to keep my head down and cover her ears.

The sound of gunfire erupted from the hallway.

Leah buried her face in my neck and trembled violently.

I held her as tightly as I could.

Damian returned fire blindly into the corridor.

His private security forces were shouting commands over their radios.

A bullet struck the wall just inches above my head.

Plaster rained down on my hair.

Damian grabbed my arm and pulled us toward a hidden panel in the wall.

He pushed the panel open to reveal a dark, narrow staircase.

We ran down into the darkness as the fighting above us grew louder.

We reached a subterranean garage where a dusty sedan was parked.

Damian pushed us into the back seat and hotwired the engine.

He drove us through a secret tunnel that led into the nearby woods.

I asked him who was trying to kill us.

He looked at me through the rearview mirror.

He said they were not trying to kill us.

He said they were only trying to kill the child.
