Chapter 1 - The Black Car

The heavy glass doors of the restaurant closed behind us.
The silence of the alley was terrifying after the chaos inside.
Damian carried Leah effortlessly in his other arm while his grip on my wrist felt like a steel trap.
She still had a death grip on the corner of my stained waitress apron.
He pushed me toward a massive black SUV waiting with its engine running.
I stumbled into the leather seats as his security team surrounded the vehicle.
The doors locked with a heavy mechanical click that sounded like a prison cell closing.
Damian sat across from me in the dim cabin light.
Leah crawled directly into my lap and buried her small face in my chest.
Her vanilla and lavender scent mixed with my own lotion.
I wrapped my arms around her instinctively.
Damian watched my every move with a dangerous intensity.
He handed me a tablet from the seat pocket.
I looked down at the glowing screen.
It was a medical file from the night I gave birth.
The name of my baby was written clearly at the top.
However, the status next to her name did not say deceased.
The bright red letters spelled out the word transferred.
I looked up at him with tears blinding my vision.
May you like
Damian leaned closer until I could feel the cold radiating from him.
He told me the man who signed that transfer order was sitting in his basement right now.
