Chapter 3 - The Doctor's Secret

The room smelled like old paper and antiseptic.
Damian turned on a harsh overhead light.
There was a metal table in the center of the room covered in documents and photographs.
He pointed to a picture of an empty wooden casket.
He explained that he exhumed his wife's grave when he realized Leah did not share his bloodline.
The coffin was completely empty.
I felt a cold sweat break out on my forehead.
I asked him how this connected to my baby.
He picked up a financial ledger and handed it to me.
There was a wire transfer of five million dollars sent to the doctor who delivered my child.
The date of the transfer was exactly two years ago.
The sender's name was heavily redacted with black ink.
Damian told me the doctor confessed everything after ten hours of interrogation.
He said the doctor admitted my baby never died.
He said my baby was sold to a private buyer.
Before I could ask the buyer's name, the mansion's alarm system started blaring.
Red emergency lights flooded the room.

Damian pulled a gun from his holster.
Someone had just breached the perimeter.
