Chapter 5 - The Safe House

The safe house was a small cabin hidden deep in the mountains.
The silence of the woods felt suffocating.
Damian locked the heavy deadbolts and closed the metal blinds.
Leah finally fell asleep on a small cot in the corner.
I sat at the dusty kitchen table and stared at my shaking hands.
Damian poured two glasses of whiskey and set one in front of me.
He told me he bought Leah from a private adoption agency after his fake wife disappeared.
He said he thought he was rescuing an orphan.
I asked him why someone would go through so much trouble to fake my baby's death.
He walked over to a loose floorboard near the fireplace.
He pried it open and pulled out a manila envelope.
He said this cabin belonged to his head of security.
He dumped the contents of the envelope onto the table.
There were dozens of photographs of me.
The photos were dated months before I ever got pregnant.
Someone had been tracking my every move for years.

Then I saw the name signed at the bottom of a surveillance report.
It was the name of Damian's own father.
