Chapter 9 - The Safehouse

The Chief screamed in absolute agony, dropping to one knee as his gun fired wildly into the ceiling.

Rachel lunged forward with explosive speed, tackling the massive man to the concrete floor.

She delivered a devastating right hook to his jaw, instantly knocking him completely unconscious.

Marcus rushed over to the steel cage and smashed the heavy padlock with his iron wrench.

Lily and Leo ran out of the cell and collapsed into their mother's desperate, sobbing embrace.

"We have to leave right now," Rachel urged, securing the Chief's weapon and handcuffs.

They dragged the unconscious Chief out of the bunker and loaded him into the back of the stolen ambulance.

Rachel drove them out of the city limits, heading toward a highly secure federal FBI safehouse in the woods.

She knew a trustworthy federal agent named Miller who had been secretly investigating the city's corruption for years.

They arrived at the heavily fortified cabin, and Agent Miller immediately rushed them inside to safety.

Federal medical personnel carefully treated Sarah's bruises and gave the exhausted children warm blankets.

Agent Miller locked the Chief of Police in a reinforced holding cell in the basement.

"You did an incredible job, Rachel," Agent Miller said, handing her a hot cup of coffee in the kitchen.

"We finally have enough evidence to tear down the entire corrupt syndicate."

Rachel took a sip of the coffee, finally letting her guard down for the first time all night.

Then, she noticed the unique, custom-made gold ring gleaming on Agent Miller's right hand.

Sarah had described that exact ring to Rachel in the ambulance.

It did not belong to an FBI agent; it belonged to the ruthless cartel boss who actually ran the city.
