Chapter 3 - The Fire Trap

Rachel drew her weapon and sprinted toward the pediatric ward.
The hallway was completely empty, and the nurse's station was deserted.
She checked Leo's room, but the hospital bed was entirely empty.
A nurse walked out of the adjacent supply closet, looking completely confused.
"Where did the two children go?" Rachel demanded.
"A male officer just transferred them to a secure federal facility five minutes ago," the nurse replied.
Rachel did not wait to hear the rest of the explanation.
She ran down the emergency stairwell and burst out into the hospital parking lot.
She needed concrete evidence from Sarah's apartment to prove Jenkins was corrupt before she could trigger an amber alert.
Rachel drove her cruiser back to the crumbling Detroit apartment complex with her sirens off.
She kicked open the door to apartment 4B and began tearing through the dark rooms.
She found a loose floorboard under Sarah's bed and pried it open with her flashlight.
Inside was a heavy metal lockbox containing a USB drive and stacks of cash.
Suddenly, the front door of the apartment slammed shut with a deafening crash.
Rachel heard the heavy deadbolt lock engage from the outside.

Thick, black smoke instantly began pouring into the room from under the door frame.
Someone had poured gasoline in the hallway and dropped a match.
