Chapter 8 - The Hostage Exchange

The Chief of Police smiled a sickening, arrogant smile as Rachel raised her weapon.
Lily and Leo were locked inside a rusted steel cage behind him, crying frantically for their mother.
"Put the gun down, Rachel, or I will blow her brains out right now," the Chief threatened calmly.
Sarah’s face was badly bruised, but her eyes were filled with absolute, unyielding defiance.
"Don't listen to him, Officer!" Sarah screamed, struggling violently against his grip.
"He is going to kill us all anyway!"
Marcus slowly stepped out from the shadows, holding a heavy wrench he had found near the entrance.
"You really think you can get away with murdering two cops and a civilian family?" Marcus asked, trying to distract him.
The Chief laughed, pressing the barrel of his gun harder against Sarah's temple.
"I own the mayor, the judges, and the press," the Chief boasted arrogantly.
"By tomorrow morning, the news will report that a rogue dispatcher and a corrupt cop murdered this family before turning their guns on each other."
Rachel realized the Chief was absolutely right about his control over the city.
She slowly lowered her weapon and placed it gently onto the concrete floor.
"Let the kids go, and you can have me," Rachel offered, kicking her gun away.
The Chief smirked and violently shoved Sarah to the ground.

He raised his weapon to shoot Rachel directly in the chest.
Before he could pull the trigger, Sarah pulled a hidden tactical knife from her boot and drove it deep into the Chief's calf.
