Chapter 8 - The Ransom Meeting

Sadie screamed and pulled furiously against the handcuffs, the metal biting painfully into her wrists.
She refused to be left behind while the man she loved walked into a deadly trap.
Frantically looking around the dim cabin, her eyes landed on a small, rusted hairpin on the floorboards.
She stretched her leg out, dragging the pin toward her with the tip of her shoe.
With trembling fingers, she picked the lock, a skill she had learned surviving on the streets long before she became a maid.
The cuff clicked open, and she sprinted out of the cabin, the freezing rain soaking her clothes.
She found a rusted, abandoned pickup truck behind the cabin, hot-wired the ignition, and sped down the muddy road following Roman’s tire tracks.
She arrived at the shipping docks just as the sun began to rise over the gray, stormy ocean.
Hiding behind a stack of massive shipping containers, Sadie peered into the open warehouse.
Roman was standing entirely alone in the center of the vast space, clutching his bleeding side.
He was completely surrounded by thirty heavily armed men from the Moretti family.
Standing at the front of the mob was the rival boss, a cruel old man with a scarred face.
"I will sign over my entire territory, every port and every casino," Roman offered loudly, his voice echoing in the warehouse.
"Just let the girl walk away clean, and my empire is yours."
Sadie gasped, realizing he was giving up everything he had ever built just to guarantee her safety.
The Moretti boss threw his head back and laughed a cruel, heartless laugh.
"You have gone soft, Costa," the old man sneered.

From the shadows behind the rival boss, a young man stepped forward with a wicked, triumphant smile.
It was Toby, completely uninjured, holding a remote detonator in his hand.
