Chapter 6 - The Blood Stained Hands

Sadie fell to her knees, frantically pressing her hands against the terrible wound in Roman’s back.

He was losing blood incredibly fast, his skin turning a sickly, pale gray under the red emergency lights.

"Don't you dare die on me," Sadie sobbed, her hands completely covered in his warm blood.

She knew she could not take him to a hospital without the Morettis finishing the job.

Using every ounce of strength in her body, she dragged his massive, unconscious frame toward the secret exit tunnel at the back of the panic room.

The tunnel led to a hidden underground garage, where a plain, unmarked sedan was waiting.

She managed to heave him into the backseat, her muscles screaming in agony.

Sadie drove blindly through the stormy night, finally arriving at an abandoned hunting cabin deep in the woods that she had once heard the guards mention.

She dragged him inside, laid him on a wooden table, and found a dusty first-aid kit in the bathroom.

With shaking hands and no anesthesia, Sadie used a pair of tweezers to dig the bullet out of the mafia boss’s flesh.

Roman screamed in agony, his eyes snapping open as he thrashed against her grip.

She stitched the wound closed, tears streaming down her face as she worked.

When she finished, Roman lay exhausted, looking up at her with an intensity that made her breath catch.

He reached up, wrapping his large, bloody hand around the back of her neck.

He pulled her down and kissed her deeply, a desperate, bruising kiss that tasted of iron and survival.

Sadie melted against him, realizing in that chaotic moment that she had fallen entirely in love with a monster.

Suddenly, Sadie’s cell phone buzzed loudly in her pocket.

She pulled it out and looked at the screen, her heart stopping completely.

It was a text message from Toby’s phone, showing a live video feed of a massive bomb strapped to the underside of their getaway car.
