Chapter 3 - The Empty Chamber

The entire dining room held its breath.

Sadie’s fingers trembled violently as she reached out and wrapped her hand around the cold, heavy metal of the gun.

Toby sobbed on the floor, begging her to spare his life.

She slowly raised the weapon, pointing the barrel directly at the delivery boy’s chest.

Her vision blurred with hot, desperate tears.

She could not become a murderer, not even to save her own life.

In a sudden, desperate movement, Sadie pivoted and aimed the gun squarely at Roman’s head.

Vito and the other guards instantly drew their weapons, screaming orders at her to drop the gun.

Roman simply raised a hand, silencing his men immediately.

He looked at the barrel of the gun pointed at his face, and a slow, terrifying smile spread across his lips.

"Pull the trigger, Sadie," Roman challenged, his eyes burning with a dark, twisted approval.

She closed her eyes and squeezed the trigger with all her might.

The gun let out a hollow, metallic click.

The chamber was completely empty.

Roman stood up, walked around the table, and gently took the useless weapon from her shaking hands.

"You are braver than half the men in this room," Roman whispered, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

He pulled a loaded magazine from his pocket, slammed it into the gun, and racked the slide.

Without even looking, Roman aimed down at the floor and shot Toby directly in the kneecap.

Toby’s agonizing scream echoed off the crystal chandeliers as Roman casually handed the gun to Vito.

"Take the trash out," Roman ordered.

Suddenly, a deafening explosion shattered the massive glass windows of the dining room.

Bullets began tearing through the room like a hailstorm, shredding the walls and the expensive artwork.
