Chapter 10 - The Last Vow

Roman saw the glint of the barrel out of the corner of his eye.
Without a moment of hesitation, he threw his body violently in front of Sadie.
The gunshot echoed sharply, and Roman grunted as the bullet tore through his shoulder.
Sadie screamed, but Roman stayed on his feet, pulling a hidden handgun from his waistband and ending the goon’s life with a single, precise shot.
He leaned heavily against Sadie, bleeding but alive, as police sirens began to wail in the far distance.
Fast forward six months later.
The dark, oppressive fortress on Long Island was a thing of the past, sold and forgotten.
Sadie stood on the balcony of a beautiful, sunlit villa nestled in the rolling green hills of Tuscany, Italy.
Roman walked up behind her, wrapping his strong arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.
His scars had healed, and the heavy burden of the mafia empire was finally gone from his eyes.
He had handed his territory over to a legitimate holding company, leaving the violence behind to marry the woman who had saved his life.
"Are you happy, Mrs. Costa?" Roman murmured, placing a gentle kiss on her neck.
"More than I ever dreamed," Sadie smiled, leaning back into the warm, safe embrace of her husband.
Later that afternoon, while Roman was out buying fresh groceries in the village, Sadie decided to organize the last of the moving boxes in his new study.
She wiped down his antique wooden desk, noticing that a small, hidden side drawer had been left slightly ajar.
Curiosity getting the better of her, Sadie pulled the drawer open and found a faded, yellowed file folder with her full birth name written on the tab.
Her heart began to race as she opened the folder and pulled out a stack of old, official documents.

Staring back at her was a certified DNA report proving that she was the sole, legitimate heir to the Costa family bloodline.
And attached to it was a confession letter, proving that Roman was not a Costa at all, but the orphan of the rival assassin who had murdered her real parents.
