Chapter 7 - Trust No One

I collapsed heavily back against the side of the SUV, gasping desperately for air.
Detective Harris kept his flashlight aimed directly at my mother, who was bleeding profusely on the ground.
"I strictly told you to wait for backup, Natalie," he scolded me sharply.
"You completely disappeared from the hospital, how did you even find us here?" I asked, completely exhausted.
"I put a police tracker on Marcus's car months ago," Harris explained smoothly.
He walked over slowly and picked up the silver handgun my mother had dropped.
But instead of pointing it at my dangerous mother, he slowly turned and aimed the weapon directly at my chest.
My heart completely stopped beating in my chest.
"Detective, what are you doing?" I asked, my voice trembling wildly.
My mother slowly sat up in the thick mud and began laughing that same terrifying, evil laugh.
"You really thought a local detective cared about a broken little boy?" she taunted cruelly.
"Harris is the one who introduced me to the dangerous cartel in the first place."
I realized with utter horror that the entire police investigation was a complete setup from day one.
Harris had deliberately staged the intense fight at the hospital just to gain my trust and find the insurance policy.
"Where is the document, Natalie?" Harris demanded forcefully, pulling the heavy hammer back on the gun.
I glanced nervously into the back seat, where Eli was barely breathing.
I knew with absolute certainty that if I gave them what they wanted, we would both be executed immediately.
"It's inside the house, hidden in the guest bedroom vent," I lied smoothly.

Harris violently gestured with the gun, ordering me to walk inside and retrieve it for him.
As I took a hesitant step onto the broken porch, a deafening police siren suddenly blared down the street.
