Chapter 3 - The Desperate Escape

The loud crack of the gunshot shattered the quiet rhythm of the medical heart monitors.

Detective Harris dove forward aggressively, tackling the suited man down to the hard floor.

I screamed loudly and threw my body over Eli to shield his fragile frame from the flying glass.

The stray bullet had completely shattered the observation window looking out into the busy hospital corridor.

Nurses and doctors instantly began screaming in pure panic outside the room.

"Take your son and run to the emergency stairwell right now!" Detective Harris yelled as he wrestled the deadly attacker.

I didn't hesitate for a single second.

I ripped the IV line cleanly from Eli's arm, ignoring the small drop of blood that followed.

I scooped my frail six-year-old into my arms, feeling the terrifying heat of his fever through his cotton hospital gown.

He whimpered in extreme pain, but I held him tight and sprinted out into the chaotic hallway.

The corridor was a complete nightmare of terrified people fleeing blindly in every direction.

I ducked into the heavy concrete stairwell just as another silenced gunshot echoed from Eli's room.

I prayed desperately to God that Detective Harris was still alive.

I ran down three flights of stairs, my lungs burning heavily and my legs shaking wildly.

We finally emerged into the cold, damp air of the hospital's underground parking garage.

I frantically searched for a safe place to hide behind the endless rows of parked vehicles.

A dark black SUV suddenly sped around the corner, its massive tires squealing loudly on the concrete.

It slammed on its brakes directly in front of us, aggressively blocking our only path to the exit.

The heavily tinted rear window slowly rolled down.

Rachel was sitting in the back seat, staring at me with a desperate, frantic expression on her face.
