Chapter 5 - The Deadly Trap

The rainy streets of Dallas blurred rapidly past the windows as Marcus sped recklessly through red lights.

Eli was shaking violently in my arms, his fever spiking dangerously from the freezing air inside the car.

"We have to get him to another hospital, he desperately needs a doctor," I pleaded.

"If we stop moving for even a second, the cartel men Mom hired will find us and execute us," Rachel shot back.

We finally pulled aggressively into the dark, familiar driveway of my suburban home.

The front door was already kicked open, the expensive wood splintered violently around the lock.

"Someone is already inside," Marcus whispered, pulling a small silver handgun from his waistband.

Rachel looked completely panicked as she turned around to face me.

"You know this house better than anyone, where would Mom hide the actual policy?" she asked quickly.

I thought critically about my mother's twisted mind and her absolute obsession with control.

"She always hid her most valuable things inside the air vent in my guest bedroom," I realized aloud.

Marcus told us strictly to wait in the car while he went inside to secure the dangerous document.

He slowly crept up the front steps and disappeared quietly into the dark hallway.

Seconds ticked by in agonizing silence while heavy rain pounded relentlessly against the windshield.

Suddenly, three unbelievably loud gunshots echoed from inside the house.

A bright flash of muzzle light illuminated the living room window.

Rachel screamed Marcus's name in pure horror and threw the car door open.

Before she could step out, a solitary figure emerged from the front door.

It was my mother, holding Marcus's gun and staring directly at our car with a dead, hollow expression.
