Chapter 2 - The Shadow Threat

My mother's dark laughter echoed down the hallway as the officers violently dragged her away.

Rachel was crying hysterically, begging me to help her, but I completely ignored her pathetic pleas.

I sat on the edge of Eli's hospital bed, smoothing the damp hair away from his bruised forehead.

He looked up at me with tired, frightened eyes and asked if the monsters were really gone.

I kissed his cheek and promised him that no one would ever hurt him again.

Detective Harris stayed behind in the room, his expression noticeably darker than before.

"Natalie, we need to talk about what they were actually hiding in your backyard," he said quietly.

He explained that the police had already sent a forensic team to my property to dig up the lockbox.

When they cracked the heavy steel open, they did not find stolen money or family heirlooms.

They found a thick stack of highly classified financial documents belonging to a notorious local crime syndicate.

My sister’s deadbeat boyfriend had stolen the documents, and Rachel foolishly used my house to hide the evidence.

My mother helped her, hoping to extort the criminal organization for millions of dollars once the heat died down.

They had essentially turned my innocent home into a massive target for ruthless killers.

A sudden chill swept through the room as the hospital door slowly creaked open.

A tall man dressed in a sharp gray suit walked in, flashing a shiny badge that identified him as a federal agent.

He looked at Detective Harris with a terrifyingly calm and empty expression.

"The local police are no longer needed here, Detective," the stranger announced smoothly.

"The federal government is taking over this investigation immediately, and we are relocating the boy."

Detective Harris slowly reached for his service weapon, his eyes locked onto the stranger.

"I ran a check on all federal task forces this morning, and no one was assigned to this specific case," Harris replied tightly.

The man in the suit smiled, quickly pulling a silenced pistol from beneath his designer jacket.
