Chapter 4 - The Unholy Alliance

"Get in the car right now if you want him to live!" Rachel screamed over the roaring engine noise.

I took a defensive step backward, holding Eli even tighter against my chest.

"You literally tried to kill him, why would I ever trust you?" I yelled back furiously.

Rachel looked frantically over her shoulder toward the garage entrance ramp.

"Mom completely sold us out to the cartel to save her own miserable life," she cried out.

"The men coming down those stairs right now will gladly kill all of us."

The heavy metal door of the stairwell suddenly slammed open with a terrifying crash.

Three heavily armed men poured into the garage, their dark eyes instantly locking onto me.

I realized with a sinking heart that I had absolutely no other choice.

I yanked the heavy car door open and threw myself onto the leather seat with Eli.

The driver slammed his foot on the gas, and the SUV tore out of the garage just as bullets struck the concrete behind us.

I looked up at the driver's seat and realized it was Rachel's shady boyfriend, Marcus.

He looked completely terrified, his hands gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles were bright white.

"Where exactly are we going?" I demanded, trying desperately to slow my rapid breathing.

"We have to get the insurance policy Mom secretly hid inside your house," Marcus replied frantically.

I stared at him in complete and utter confusion.

"I thought she buried stolen financial documents in the shed," I said.

Rachel let out a bitter, hollow laugh that sent chills down my spine.

"That was a fake story Mom told the police to throw them off the real trail," she explained darkly.

"Mom took out a massive, illegal life insurance policy on Eli a month ago."

The horrifying truth hit me like a physical blow to the stomach.

They hadn't just beaten him because he saw them hiding stolen mafia documents.

My own mother was actively trying to murder my son for a multi-million dollar payout.
