Chapter 9 - The Final Standoff

The heavy SUV tore across the front lawn, ripping up the grass and spitting dirt into the air.

The headlights blinded me as the massive vehicle sped toward our vulnerable bodies.

I closed my eyes and wrapped my arms around my unconscious father.

Elias did not dive out of the way.

He stood his ground, planting his feet firmly in the dirt.

He pulled a heavy, antique revolver from his jacket pocket.

He aimed down the sights with incredible, steady precision.

He fired three rapid shots directly into the front driver-side tire of the accelerating SUV.

The tire exploded with a deafening pop.

The heavy vehicle swerved violently to the left, completely losing traction on the wet grass.

The SUV crashed head-on into the massive, ancient oak tree in our front yard.

The impact crushed the front grill and shattered the windshield into a million pieces.

State troopers, alerted by the police chief's radio, suddenly swarmed the street with sirens blaring.

They rushed to the wrecked vehicle and ripped the driver's door open.

They dragged a bloody, furious Miranda from the deployed airbags and slammed her onto the hood.

The nightmare of her reign was finally, violently brought to an end.
