Chapter 2 - The Return to the Cage

Miranda forced me into the passenger seat of her car.

The drive back to my house was silent and utterly terrifying.

I stared out the window, praying for someone to notice my tears.

Miranda kept one hand firmly clamped around my wrist to ensure I could not open the door.

She calmly explained that her brother owed her a massive favor from their past.

She bragged that no one in this town would ever believe a troubled teenager over a respected nurse.

We pulled into our driveway, and I felt a heavy knot form in my stomach.

I hoped my father was awake from his night shift.

I desperately wanted him to see the truth standing right in front of him.

Miranda dragged me through the front door and locked the deadbolt behind us.

The house was dark, silent, and smelled faintly of bleach.

I ran into the living room and found my father fast asleep on the couch.

I shook his shoulder, begging him to wake up and help me.

He groaned, but his eyes remained tightly closed.

He was in a sleep so deep it felt entirely unnatural.

Miranda walked into the room holding a manila folder.

She tossed it onto the coffee table right in front of me.

She told me to read the top page if I wanted to know my future.

It was a psychiatric commitment form for a highly secure facility out of state.

My blood ran cold when I looked at the bottom of the page.

My father's signature was already signed perfectly on the dotted line.
