Chapter 3 - The Insurance Plot

I stared at the signature, unable to comprehend how my father could send me away.
Miranda grabbed my arm and dragged me down the hallway toward the basement door.
She shoved me down the wooden steps and locked the heavy door from the outside.
I tumbled onto the cold concrete floor in the dark.
I crawled toward the small window well to let in a sliver of morning sunlight.
The basement was filled with old boxes and discarded medical supplies from Miranda's old clinic.
I began tearing through the boxes, desperately searching for a tool to pick the lock.
Instead of a tool, I found a hidden metal lockbox tucked behind the water heater.
The lock was flimsy, and I easily pried it open with a rusted screwdriver.
Inside the box was a thick, black leather ledger.
I flipped through the pages and discovered a horrifying financial trail.
Miranda had been stealing highly regulated narcotics from the local hospital for years.
Beneath the ledger were two massive life insurance policies.
One policy was taken out on my father's life.
The other policy was taken out on mine.
The payout for our accidental deaths was over two million dollars.
I checked the activation date on the heavily stamped paperwork.
The policy had officially matured three days ago.
