Chapter 1 - The Betrayal on the Porch

The officer raised one hand between my grandfather and my stepmother.

His expression was completely unreadable as he stared at my trembling arms.

I thought this was the moment I would finally be saved.

I took a deep breath to speak the truth.

Before I could utter a single word, Miranda let out a devastating, theatrical sob.

She buried her face in her hands.

She wailed that my grandfather had violently dragged me out of my bed in the middle of the night.

I shook my head frantically.

I told the officer she was lying.

I pointed to the purple bruises blossoming across my collarbone.

I said she was the one who had been hurting me for months.

The taller officer stepped closer to the porch light.

He leaned down to look at my damaged skin.

Then he looked over my shoulder at Miranda.

A strange, silent look passed between them in the cold morning air.

It was a look of dangerous familiarity.

The officer stood up straight and pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

He did not walk toward my stepmother.

He grabbed my grandfather by the shoulder and shoved him hard against the wooden doorframe.

Grandpa Elias grunted in pain but did not fight back.

I screamed and tried to pull the officer away.

The second cop grabbed my arms and dragged me down the porch steps.

The lead officer read my grandfather his Miranda rights.

He declared Elias was under arrest for the kidnapping and suspected abuse of a minor.

I watched in absolute horror as they forced the only man who loved me into the back of a police cruiser.

Miranda walked down the steps and wrapped her cold arms around my shaking shoulders.

She leaned close to my ear as the police car drove away into the morning fog.

She whispered that the lead officer was her older brother.

She smiled and told me my real nightmare was just beginning.
