Chapter 4 - The Desperate Flight

I knew I had to get out of that basement before Miranda came back downstairs.
I used the rusted screwdriver to chip away at the wood around the door frame.
My hands bled, but I refused to stop until the metal strike plate finally gave way.
I pushed the door open and crept silently into the kitchen.
I needed to wake my father up and show him the insurance policies.
I tiptoed into the living room where he was still slumped on the couch.
His skin was deathly pale, and his breathing was incredibly shallow.
I noticed an empty medical syringe rolling slowly across the glass coffee table.
Miranda had heavily sedated him to ensure he would not interfere with her plan.
I shook him violently, screaming his name, but he was completely unresponsive.
I heard the floorboards creak behind me.
I spun around and saw Miranda standing in the hallway.
She was holding a massive, serrated kitchen knife in her right hand.
She did not lunge at me or try to attack me.
Instead, she reversed her grip and slashed the blade deeply across her own forearm.
Blood instantly spilled onto the hardwood floor.
She tossed the bloody knife directly at my feet.

She pulled out her cell phone and began screaming hysterically into it.
She told the 911 dispatcher that her unhinged stepdaughter had just stabbed her.
