Chapter 9 - The Dead Man Switch

The task force director snatched the leather-bound ledger from my trembling hands.
He boasted about how much the technology corporation had paid him to ensure this evidence never saw the light of day.
He ordered his corrupt agents to execute Reyes and frame my brother and me for the murders.
I looked at Miles, who was leaning weakly against a pile of moving boxes.
I knew we were completely out of options and out of time.
I took a slow breath and told the director that the physical ledger was already obsolete.
I lied flawlessly, claiming that my grandmother had engineered a digital security switch tied to my biometric data.
I told him that if I did not enter a specific passcode into my phone within the next three minutes, the data would broadcast to every major news outlet in the world.
The director's arrogant smile faltered, replaced by a shadow of genuine doubt and fear.
He demanded that I hand over my phone immediately to disable the broadcast.
I reached into my pocket, my fingers wrapping tightly around the heavy metal flashlight I had grabbed from Reyes earlier.
I pulled it out with lightning speed and smashed it directly into the director's face.
May you like
The director screamed in agony and blindly pulled the trigger of his weapon.
The gunshot echoed deafeningly in the small storage unit, and Reyes collapsed backward onto the concrete floor.
