Chapter 4 - The Unlikely Savior

I froze completely as the red laser sight rested directly over my heart.

Heavy footsteps echoed from the shadows of the warehouse as multiple armed men stepped forward.

I shielded my bleeding brother with my own body, waiting for the inevitable gunshot.

Before the men could fire, the warehouse windows shattered violently inward.

Thick white smoke filled the room as tear gas canisters rolled across the concrete floor.

A strong hand grabbed my shoulder and pulled me roughly toward the back exit.

I dragged Miles alongside me, coughing blindly through the suffocating chemical smoke.

We tumbled out into the rainy alleyway and collapsed against a black armored vehicle.

The door slid open to reveal Fire Investigator Daniel Reyes sitting in the driver seat.

He yelled for us to get inside immediately if we wanted to live.

I shoved Miles into the backseat and climbed in right beside him.

Reyes slammed on the gas pedal, tearing away from the warehouse just as gunfire erupted behind us.

I asked him how a simple fire investigator knew exactly where to find us in a tactical rescue.

Reyes locked the vehicle doors with a loud, mechanical click.

He looked at me through the rearview mirror and coldly stated that he was the one who set my apartment on fire.
