Chapter 7 - The Corporate Hit

The sniper shot sent my mother diving to the concrete floor in a blind panic.
The corrupt technology corporation had decided she was no longer a useful asset to their operation.
They had sent their own hit squad to eliminate everyone in the bunker, including their own hired contractor.
Gunfire rained down from the upper levels of the parking garage, tearing through the metal vehicles.
Reyes grabbed my arm and pulled me behind the reinforced engine block of his vehicle.
He handed me a spare pistol and told me to provide covering fire while he dragged Miles to safety.
I squeezed the trigger, my hands shaking violently as I fired blindly into the shadows.
My mother scrambled toward us, begging for protection from the very people she had hired.
I ignored her pleas, focusing entirely on keeping my brother alive.
Reyes successfully loaded Miles into a secondary escape tunnel located behind a maintenance door.
We sprinted down the dark corridor, leaving my mother trapped in the crossfire of her own making.
We finally reached a quiet subway maintenance shaft miles away from the chaos.
Reyes turned to me and demanded to know where my grandmother actually hid the real ledger.

I looked at the small brass key with the purple plastic tag that I still held in my pocket.
I realized the key did not belong to my apartment door at all.
