I stared at the terrifying zero on my screen, my hands trembling uncontrollably.
I immediately dialed the emergency fraud hotline for my bank.
A customer service representative answered and verified my identity through a series of security questions.
I desperately explained that two million dollars had just been stolen from my account.
The representative typed on her keyboard for a moment before her voice turned cold.
She informed me that the withdrawal had been made in person at a downtown branch.
She stated that the woman who made the transfer presented my official driver license and knew my social security number.
I told her that my driver license was currently sitting in my pocket.
The realization hit me with the force of a speeding truck.
My mother had not just copied my apartment key.
She had stolen my identity to drain my grandmother's legacy.
I ended the call and desperately dialed my brother Miles to warn him.
The phone rang four times before someone finally picked up.

I opened my mouth to speak, but the voice on the other end was not my brother.
A deep, mechanical voice whispered that Miles was currently bleeding out on the floor.
