Chapter 7 - The Grandfather's Game

Victor laughed triumphantly and forcefully ordered Luke to change directions toward our quiet suburban neighborhood.
My mind raced desperately, intensely grateful that our three boys were safely sleeping over at a friend's house tonight.
We pulled into our dark driveway and Victor violently shoved his gun harder against Luke's neck.
We all stepped out of the car and walked slowly toward the detached garage in the backyard.
The night was completely silent, hiding the terrifying hostage situation unfolding in the darkness.
Luke punched the keypad to open the heavy garage door, turning on the dim overhead lights.
The garage was filled with old bicycles, lawn equipment, and a large, dusty cardboard box labeled "Violet."
Victor ordered me to stand against the cold brick wall while holding the baby tightly.
He commanded Luke to open the box and slowly hand over the encrypted digital ledger.
Luke knelt on the concrete floor and began digging through the beautiful, unused pink baby clothes.
My heart hammered violently against my ribs as I waited for the inevitable bloodbath.
Victor stepped closer, his greedy eyes entirely focused on the bottom of the cardboard box.

Luke reached his hand deep into the center of the old baby blankets.
Instead of pulling out a digital hard drive, Luke grabbed a heavy, loaded revolver he had hidden there years ago for emergencies.
