Chapter 5 - The Price of a Life

The horrifying realization hit me like a violent freight train.

My ruthless, abusive father was actually still alive and actively hunting my family.

The blaring sound of hospital security alarms began to echo loudly through the maternity ward.

Silas cursed under his breath, realizing he did not have time to grab the baby from the locked nursery.

He warned us that this was far from over and quickly escaped down the emergency stairwell.

Luke grabbed my hand and told me we needed to take the baby and run before the police arrived.

He knew that if Child Protective Services got involved, my father’s expensive lawyers would easily claim the child.

I frantically agreed, knowing my father was a monster who would completely destroy the little girl's life.

We rushed into the nursery, quickly wrapped the sleeping baby in a warm hospital blanket, and sneaked out through the loading dock.

The cold night air hit my face as we aggressively sprinted toward our parked car in the dark garage.

I clutched the tiny, innocent girl against my chest, fiercely determined to protect her at all costs.

We finally reached our vehicle and Luke frantically fumbled with his car keys.

He unlocked the doors and we both threw ourselves into the front seats, gasping for air.

I turned around to safely secure the baby in the empty car seat in the back.

My heart stopped completely when I saw a dark figure sitting calmly in the shadows of the backseat.

My father, Victor, leaned forward and pressed the cold barrel of a shotgun against the back of Luke's head.
