Chapter 1 - The Shattered Truth

I stared at my husband in the sterile hospital corridor, waiting for the words that would destroy my life.
He took a shaky breath and ran his trembling hands through his hair.
"The baby belongs to me," Luke whispered, his voice cracking under the weight of his immense guilt.
I felt the entire floor drop out from beneath my feet.
My mind raced back to the long nights he claimed he was working late at the firm last year.
I had trusted him implicitly for eleven beautiful years of marriage.
I asked him who the mother of the innocent child was.
Luke looked down at the floor, unable to meet my desperate, tear-filled eyes.
"She passed away during the delivery two hours ago," he said softly.
A complicated wave of grief and pure anger violently crashed over me.
I demanded to know the name of the woman who had destroyed my perfect family.
Luke gently took my hand and led me to the large glass window of the nursery.
A beautiful newborn baby girl was sleeping peacefully inside a clear plastic bassinet.
She had a head full of thick, dark hair that looked incredibly familiar.
Luke pointed to the medical chart hanging on the edge of the crib.
I leaned closer to read the name printed in bold black ink.
The air completely completely escaped my lungs when I saw the name on the paper.
